Situated along the Golden Circle, Geysir is Iceland's most popular geyser from which all geysers were named. It is believed to have formed in the late 13th century when Mount Hekla erupted. It became active from the beginning of the 19th century, spouting water regularly every 3 hours. It suddenly grew silent in 1916 and was only tickled with soap water to spout.
Though especially dormant today, Geysir used to expel hot, steaming water up to 100 metres high and would last for about an hour. However, tourists would most likely never see Geysir spouting water these days. Luckily, travel to the area will not be wasted as visitors will enjoy many other attractions. One of them is the actively erupting Strokkur, which shoots up scalding hot water 20 to 30 metres high evert 4 to 8 minutes.
Nearby tourists will also find Laugarfall which offers panoramic views of the Geysir area, and the Konungssteinar or The King's Stones which was the area visited by King Christian IX of Denmark.
