Budapest is the capital and biggest city of Hungary. It is one truly amazing and interesting place to visit, often compared with destinations like Paris, Vienna and Prague, but with its own unique taste of Hungarian exotics. The city of Budapest is situated in very picturesque area, laying down on the both banks of the Danube river – one of the biggest rivers in Europe. This is the reason that it is often called “Queen of the Danube”. Today's Budapest is actually the conglomerate of 3 older cities that became one not that long ago. Those sties are Buda and Obuda on the west side and Pest on the east side of the river. Aldo Pest was and is still larger, Buda is more known and was for a very long time the political center of the area inhabited by the Hungarian people. Nowadays Pest is holding most of the administrative and government buildings, but Buda remains the most romantic and historic part of the city. When visiting Budapest you may like to split your time as to see the landmarks of Buda and Pest in different days. It is good idea also to be aware of small differences of stile and type of shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities while you wonder in the two parts of this wonderful city. It is good to schedule also visits of the numerous cultural events like opera, concerts and ballet, which are constantly available in Budapest and are very inexpensive and of good quality. The landmarks that you need to put in your “to see” list are: the Parliament building on the banks of the Danube and the Castle Hill (Várhegy), which is collection of palaces, churches and monuments, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Budapest can be proud of some very good museums as well, like the National Museum (Nemzeti Muzeum), the Museum of Fine Arts (Szepmuveszeti Muzeum), National Gallery (Nemzeti Galeria) and the Historical Museum of Budapest. On the side of more modern attractions you will find Budapest very welcoming as well.
