Guyana had been a previous settlement of the Dutch and afterwards for more than 200 years, from the British. Guyana is the only nation of the Commonwealth of Nations, at the central land of South America, and furthermore it is the only one on the continent where English is the authorized language. Guyana is one of the Caribbean nations that are not an island. Moreover, it is affiliate of CARICOM – the Caribbean Community, which has its secretariat head offices in Guyana's capital, Georgetown. Guyana accomplished self-government from the UK on 26 May 1966, and became nation on 23 February 1970.
