Cayenne is the capital and biggest port of French Guiana.
Tye city of Cayenne is an interesting mix of French provincial town and typically Caribbean city. It offers good accomodation and is often the first stop of the visitor in Guiana. Cayenne is a good base for exploring the rest of the country due to its good communications with most of Guiana and sufficient infrastructure.
The city itself packs several interesting landmarks which include the former Jesuit residence of the Prefect in the Palace de Grenoble, the Laussat Canal and the Botanical Garden. Close to the centre of Cayenne are the Musée Départemental Franconie and the Musée des Cultures Guyanaises, which feature good collections on indigenous peoples culture and the famous penal settlements on Devil's Island. Close to the city are also nice sandy beaches, which worth a visit in the dry season.
