Quetzaltenango, or Xela for short, is a city in Guatemala. It is the 2nd largest urban zone in the country, boasting a number of attractions like volcanoes, rivers, mountains, and hot springs. Xela makes the perfect base for exploring the highlands of Guatemala or Los Altos.
The town has several perfectly preserved colonial structures on its main avenues that tourists will enjoy seeing. This includes the Espiritu Santo Cathedral, which consists of 2 structures with one built around the 1500s. There's also the Municipal Theatre, which is considered a landmark in Neoclassical style.
For a taste of culture and everyday living in the city, a stop at the Parque Central is a must. It is the hub of entertainment and cultural activities in the city. On the 1st Sunday of each month the central park becomes a market where artisans can display their wares and handicrafts.
The perfect way to wind the day down is to savour great views of the Quetsaltenango's valley via a stroll to the Cerro del Baul.
