Antigua Guatemala is a city situated on the central highlands of Guatemala. It was the capital of the country until 1717, when a 7.4 magnitude earthquake devastated the city. This prompted the authorities to move the capital to another city.
Despite such destruction, Antigua Guatemala is the premier destination in the country. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved Baroque, as well as magnificent ruins of colonial churches.
Parque Central is the heart of Antigua Guatemala and is a favoured gathering spot for both locals and tourists. From here visitors can see the Arco de Santa Catalina, La Catedral, Convento de Capuchinas, and Iglesia La Merced.
North of the city travellers will find the Hill of the Cross where they can view the city and the Volcan de Agua rising from the south. Tourists can also enjoy an afternoon learning how to make handcrafted souvenirs, or tour the El Mercado for produce and goods. There's also a Coffee Farm Tour for the java-holics.
