Greece is located in the southeastern section of Europe on the Mediterranean Sea. The Greek peninsula is 130,000km2 and the well-known Greek Islands represent 20% of the country's surface area. In all, there are approximately 1,400 islands with only 169 inhabited. Most of the islands lie between the coasts of Greece and Turkey in the Aegean Sea. The country has a population of close to 12 million with over four million living in Athens, the capital city.
The largest single contributor to the Greek economy is tourism with over 15% of the gross domestic product for the country generated by tourism directly or indirectly. Nearly 20 million tourist visit Greece each year. The northern part of the country has attracts the visitors that visit Mount Olympus, Halkidiki and Pella, the country's second largest city. The country boast beautiful beaches, archeological ruins, scuba diving, a rich cultural history, lively festivals and delicious typical fare.
