Elmina is a small fishing village near Cape Coast in Ghana.
The village of Elmina was once one of the posts of the gold and slave trade held on those lands by European colonists. This was and the reason for the creation of the two major attractions of the village - the sea fort of St. Jago and the Elmina Castle. Both were built by the Portuguese in n attempt to ward off from invasions by the near Dutch fortress of Cape Coast. Those efforts were, however, insufficient and the village fell to the Dutch eventually.
Nowadays Elmina is a nice day trip from Cape Coast, with the options to visit the fort and the castle combined with one of the best beaches in the area.
