Ghana is a medium sized country in West Africa.
The country of Ghana is the first British African colony that gained independence in 1957. After this the country was initially leaded progressively by the Convention People's Party, but after a military coup against the dictatorial practices of the party in 1966 it was mainly under the control of the military. This changed in 1991, when free elections were introduced and since than Ghana is developing steady under several democratic governments.
Historically Ghana was a part of one of the great Sudanese empires, which in the 10th century dissolved in several kingdoms. By the 16th century the coast of Ghana was discovered by Portuguese explorers and from this point it became part of the gold and slave trade under the name of Gold Coast.
Nowadays Ghana offers many and different attractions combining modern developing cities with traditional African settlements and many full of wildlife national parks and reserves.
