Munich, situated on the River Isar, is the 3rd largest city in Germany, as well as the capital of Bavaria - a state in the south-western part of the country. It was founded on 1158 and was named after the city's first monastery, Munchen. The monks who lived here were the ones who started brewing beer for which the city is now famous for. Today, more than 6 million people visit the annual beer festival that started in 1810 every October. The city is one of the country's publishing and financial hubs, and has been consistently considered as a top ranking destination for migration. In fact, Mercer ranked Munich as 7th most liveable city in the world, while Monocle ranked it as the top. Aside from being the most liveable place in the world, Munich attractions are plenty and varied. There are museums like the BMW Museum, National Bavarian Museum, Alte Pinakothek, and the City Museum of Munich for those who want to learn more about history and the arts. Then, there are places that are perfect for recreation or just enjoying the day leisurely such as the Olympia Park and the Marienplatz. The latter is located at the centre of Munich and contains the city's many historic and important buildings, the most notable of which is the Glockenspiel. Munich activities do not centre on its countless attractions. Travellers who come to the city will be able to enjoy Munich's bustling night scene. Dance clubs, bars, cafe, jazz venues, and many of Munich's restaurants can be found in the city's main nightlife district of Münchener Freiheit in Schwabing. Shopaholics, meanwhile, will find that Munich shops and malls are a welcome treat. Here, one will find most popular international brand names as well as local, traditional Bavarian arts and crafts. Key areas for shopping include the vibrant food market of Viktualienmarkt, Neuhauserstrasse, and Kaufingerstrasse, as well as the area of Maximilianstrasse and Theatinerstrasse. The city is large, and finding accommodation while there might take some time. While Munich hotels offering deals are many, with choices ranging from budget to luxury, booking rooms beforehand is still recommended.
