Turku is the former capital of Finland and 4th biggest city of the country with its 200.000 inhabitants. The history of Turku goes back to the 13th century when the city became from a usual trade center the major city of the lands known as Suomi (Finland). This is the reason for building the monumental castle and cathedral of Turku, that still stand as landmarks of the city. The position of capital city was kept by Turku and under Swedish rule up until 1812 with the takeover of the lands of Finland by the Russian empire. Shortly after in 1828 the city suffered a big fire and was virtually rebuild to its modern view. Turku is known as the cradle of the Finnish culture, as the place that free Finland was born. This is not only due to its position like a capital city for many years, but also for being one of the biggest university centers of Finland – it was the site of the first Finnish university and it has two major universities - the Finnish University of Turku and the Swedish-speaking Åbo Akademi. Thanks to this Turku is one very culture and night entertainment place, that you will certainly enjoy visiting. When in Turku we recommend that you take a day or two to visit the landmarks of this special city and the rest of the time you may spend enjoying the available cultural and entertainment options in your time of visit. The major landmarks of the city are: Turku Castle and Cathedral, The Art Museum, The Tuomiokirkko, Aboa Vetus and Ars Nova, Sibelius Museum, The Observatory, Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum, Wäinö Aaltonen Museum, Museum of Pharmacy and Qwensel House, Moominworld. On the fest side of things in July is the Ruisrock Festival, drawing international acts to the seaside park and in August's Turku Music Festival featuring baroque and contemporary performances.
