This small town, located on Pakri peninsula in the north west of the country, has always been a critically important port in the history. First it was a Baltic sea port used by the Swedes and later a naval base used by The Russian Empire. in 1962, Paldiski became a Soviet nuclear submarine training base. There were two land-based nuclear reactors and 16.000 people working in the whole facility. It was the biggest in the whole Soviet union.
It is a great place for travelers who are interested in history of cold war or Soviet Union. Today the city is still covered with barbed wire and abandoned bunkers. The view of abandoned apartment blocks, military debris and piles of unidentified military junk makes a spectacular view. It definitely isn“t a typical tourist destination but if you are interested in military history, you will love this town.
