Narva is the physical border between Estonia and Russia and it is actually closer to Saint Petersburg than it is to Tallinn. Narva´s role as a gatekeeper is not a new one, during the history it stayed on the edge of many different empires including Danes and Swedes. Today it is one of the most picturesque cities in Northern Europe with castles facing each other, lined up next to the Narva River. The castle of Order of Germanic Knights and The Russian Castle of Ivangorod facing each other on opposite banks of the river shows the border between Catholic North Europe and Orthodox Slav East.
Having a Russian population of %90, Narva has a very distinctive culture and it shows a totally different identity than the rest of the country. Unlike the Tallinn or Tartu, where Nordic culture is more visible, Narva has the nuances of a Russian city.
