Keren, the 2nd largest city in Eritrea, is positioned about 91 km from Asmara. The town was a key commercial centre during the Eritrean War and World War II. The city was also the site of a battle among the British and Italian troops in 1941.
Keren is a beautiful town surrounded by mountains on all sides. It is also a key agricultural centre for fruits and vegetables in the country. In addition, the city produces dairy products such as fresh milk, butter, and cheese. A trip to the local markets will yield a fruitful expedition for tourists who are looking to taste the town's produce.
While the city is not as popular as other Eritrean cities, Keren is home to a number of historic sites such as the Tigu, which is a 19th-century Egyptian fort. There's also the St. Maryam Deari, a Romanesque-style church, and the Debre Sina Monastery, which is known for its cave houses. Of course, there's the old railway station from which the town of Keren grew.
