South Sinai, the southern half of the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, boasts of many scenic spots perfect for leisurely trips, as well as mountains ideal for adventure trekking. The most famous of which is Mt. Katherine located near the town of Saint Katherine, with an elevation of 2,642 metres above sea level. Also, nearby is Mt. Sinai and Monastery of Saint Katherine, both famous due to their religious and historic significance.
Other towns in South Sinai include the capital El Tur and the more developed Sharm el Sheikh where one can enjoy city conveniences. For a dose of a laid-back vibe on the beach, the coastal towns of Nuweiba and Taba are perfect destinations. The seaside town of Ras Sudr is a favoured locale among those who live in Cairo. Meanwhile, Serabit el Khadim features many prominent and historic archeological sites including the Temple of Hathor and the ancient mining complex which contained many Proto-Sinaitic stone tablets and plinths.
