Plzen is an industrial and cultural town which is home to 165,000 people. It is also known as ‘Pilsen' because of the fact that it is the birth place of Lager (Pilsen or Beer). The earliest record that Pilsen exists dates back to the 9th century with the record mentioning Plzen as a castle. In 1295, it was considered a town. The town is not a must visit only for people who love beer. Art lovers will also gain interest because it also showcases architecture influenced by the Renaissance, Gothic, and recently, the Baroque periods, with most structures found on Praszka Street.
The main Plzen attraction is the Pilsner Urquell Beer Brewery. A historical city center also stands in Pilsen where the St Bartholomew Cathedral, the tallest church spire in the Czech Republic may be found. Plzen was occupied by the Nazis and liberated on May 1945 with the help of the American army which explains why you can find a memorial dedicated to the US army in Plzen's city center.
