Santa Fe de Bogota The capital of Colombia was founded in the Santa Fe district, specifically in the colonial neighborhood of La Candelaria in 1538 in a place that is referred to today as El Chorro de Quevado. The following year the capital was moved to an area just a few blocks away to what is known now as Plaza de Bolivar. The area was known as Santa Fe de Bogota until 2000 when it was renamed Bogota, D.C. (Special District). La Candelaria has maintained the majority if its colonial architecture and atmosphere as there are many cobblestone streets and homes that are centuries-old. The area today attracts a great deal of tourism and is home to some of the city's most prestigious universities. A number of historic plazas or squares are still intact along with churches that are over 400 years old, narrow streets full of interesting nooks and crannies and a mix of today's modern structures.
