Cartagena is on the northeastern coast of Colombia bordering the Caribbean Sea. More tourists come to Cartagena than any other place in Colombia. During Holy Week and in December the city is fuller than at any other time of the year and at that time it is the hardest to find accommodation. There are two distinct areas where tourists visit. The walled in historic colonial city and Bocagrande where there are hotels, restaurants and nightclubs face the beach. One great way to take a tour of the city is via chariot. You can easily flag down a chariot or you can go to Plaza Bolivar to find one waiting for you. There are many places of interest in the city, such as Castillo de San Felipe. The Spanish built it to protect the port from pirates when gold was being shipped from the port. There are museums, churches and other points of interest with the old colonial section of the city. Of course, being located on the Caribbean you can also enjoy beautiful beaches, mangroves and water sports.
