Sihanoukville, also called ‘Snookyville', is Cambodia's seaside town and has the one and only port in the Kingdom. The deep sea port was built about 50 years ago as a symbol of Cambodia's newfound independence. The establishment of the Independence Hotel soon followed, with the hotel even believed to be the place where Jacqueline Kennedy stayed in 1967. In 1970, the tourism industry in Sihanoukville died because of the victory of the Khmer Rouge. Chaos ruled the city and most attractions were destroyed.
In 1997, peace and order was restored and the people started rebuilding the city into a tourist town. The pretty beaches with whitish sand and turquoise coloured waters became the main attractions where swimming, scuba diving, and snorkelling may be done. There are various Sihanoukville hotels and dining places. Craving for seafood? You'll find fresh and great tasting ones in the city. Your Cambodia trip won't be complete without visiting Sihanoukville.
