Siem Reap (Angkor) in English means the ‘Flat Defeat of Siam or Thailand'. It symbolizes the Thai defeat in the hands of Cambodians who were led by King Ang Chan. In 1907, the French acquired Angkor and transformed it into a tourist town with inns and hotels aside from the temples, not to mention rejuvenating spas and to die for cuisines.
A well known Siem Reap hotel named the Grand Hotel d'Angkor which was opened in 1929 lured famous people such as Jackie Kennedy and Charlie Chaplin. Angkor tourism was disrupted, however, when the Khmer Rouge took over in 1975. In 1998, Cambodia became free and started rebuilding the tourism industry, most especially Siem Reap tourism. The Angkor temple complex is the main attraction and is even listed as the 8th Wonder of the World. Visitors who wish to be entertained while sampling delectable dishes can head to the Aspara Theatre. For souvenirs of your Siem Reap trip, you can visit the Psar Chas (the old market) where Cambodian crafts are aplenty.
