Phnom Penh is the capital city of the Kingdom of Cambodia. Phnom Penh is believed to have been established during the latter part of the 14th century. The legend is that a woman named Penh discovered a tree that had several images of Buddha. What the old woman did was to get the images and house them on a man made hill (also known as Phnom), thus the term Phnom Penh or Penh's Hill was born. The city became Cambodia's capital during the 19th century. People interested in knowing not only the history of Phnom Penh but also Cambodia's should drop by the National Museum. For a taste of the horrifying yet historical, the Killing Fields, a site where the Khmer Rouge murdered thousands, is a recommended place. Tourists who value magnificent attractions should head to the Royal Palace where the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the Silver Pagoda are found – both mixtures of French and Cambodian architecture. When in Phnom Penh, make sure to wear decent clothing, especially when visiting temples.
