Salvador is the former colonial capital and third most populous city of Brazil in South America. Renowned for its African-influenced cuisine, music and architecture, Salvador is known as "the Capital of Joy," because of its exuberant week-long Carnaval celebrations, one of Brazil's largest. Divided into two distinct sections by an escarpment, the city offers beaches ideal for swimming and diving. Inlets with great surfing waves beckon nearby, and rolling hills and mountains provide a back to the city. When visiting Salvador it is advisable to combine sightseeing with trips to the nearby clean and sandy beaches. It is a good idea to dedicate several days to walking rounds of the city landmarks and to visiting some of the cultural attractions, while dedicating the rest of the days to nice health sunny-loving attractions around the city. Most of the Salvador landmarks are reachable with a walk around the old town. The multicolored Colonial buildings and museums of the Largo de Pelourinho are one of the main draws. This central 'square' where slaves were traded has been extensively renovated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to all manner of museums, churches, restaurants and souvenir shops. Of particular note are the Museu da Ciadade (City Museum) and the Rosário dos Pretos church, built by slaves. Steep steps and narrow alleys lead to other areas of the old town, while the Lacerda Elevator (Prace Tomé de Souza) transports visitors to the lower city. As for beach fun, note that beaches near the city center are not recommended because of the pollution. The closest notable beach is Farol de Barra, which is a weekend hangout for most of the city's inhabitants. But smart tourists head further north to the picturesque tropical beaches of Itapoã, Stella Maris and Flamengo. All those are sandy beaches with palm trees, lapped by a turquoise sea that can be and a bit rough sometimes. Stella Maris and Flamengo are popular surfers' spots. Flamengo is backed by a beautiful lagoon that is great for fishing and relaxation at sunset. All beaches have beach restaurants serving freshly caught fish and cold drinks. And don't forget - there are tons more of attractions, activities and interesting places to see in Salvador, visit them and write here at HolidayStreets.com about their beauty and mystery!
