Benin is a medium sized country in Central Africa.
The lands of Benin have played a major role in the slave trade throughout the 17th and 18th century with millions of slaves send to the Americas from the ports of the country.
Benin was a French colony and this is pretty much obvious for any visitor, as influence from France is noticeable throughout the country. It is and one of the most stable countries in modern Africa, after withdrawing of the dictatorships characteristic for this part of the world until the 90's.
Nowadays Benin has build a respectable name withing\ the international community and is on a solid way for development, but poverty still forms the biggest problem of its people. Benin is also considered the homeland of Voodoo beliefs and this religions views are strong amongst local people and authorities.
For the traveler Benin is attractive with its picturesque nature, beaches and diving opportunities, as well as with its heritage of slave forts and monuments.
