Liege is a city where the North meats the South of Europe. It caries its name of Liège or Luik - the daughter of the Meuse river ans is often called 'La cité ardente' (the fiery city). Liege is also a place where the old meets with the new, as it was a major industrial center for many centuries, but nowadays it is transforming into a more calm, shopping and university center with large potential for architectural and cultural tourism. Taking a walk through the old city center one will find the typical pedestrian alleys and shopping streets with many architectural sites to see. On the other hand a visit to the central St. Lambert square will give you a nice taste of modern Liège. Liege is also known as the birthplace of world known novelist George Simenon (creator of the novels for detective Maigret) and for its sweet 'Gaufre de Liège' (Waffle of Liège - a delicacy that you can find in every bakery and even on stands at the streets).
