Ghent is quite unique city, that has preserved most of its medieval charm, while remaining modern and up to date, quite better then most of the big Flemish cities of Belgium. Ghent has always competed with near-by Bruges for industry, wealth even architecture, and nowadays it seems that it is getting the upper hand as it feels much mare real, living city, with better museums, restaurants and nightlife. It is much less tourist city also, which means that if you look for authentic Flemish city, than Ghent is the right place for you. Nowadays Ghent is a major port, connected to the sea with the Ghent-Terneuzen canal, which allows sea vessels to port in Ghent. Its traditional textile industries are updated with many modem businesses that help Ghent to remain well developt industrial city. On the see-side point of view there is awesome architectural wealth, which offers a nice combination of impressiveness and idyllic charm. The major attractions are the Counts' Castle, the Belfry and Saint Bavon's Cathedral, and the splendid Graslei.
