Baku

Baku is the capital and biggest city of Azerbaijan.
The city of Baku was an historic center for more than 2.000 years, while evidence shows settlements in the area back to the Stone Age. It is considered the birthplace of the Zoroastrian religious practice. The city was held by many different empires and conquerors like the Persians, Shirvans, Arabs, Mongols, Turks and Russians. It became the capital of the area in1922 with the establishment of the Azerbaijan Soviet Republic.
Baku has several ancient landmarks, that deserve a visit. Its Waled city from the 12th century is one of the well preserved ancient fortifications in the world and combined with the old city's buildins and minarets behind the walls, it certainly deserves a visit. Other landmarks include Shirvan Shah's Palace and Maiden Tower.
The city of Baku is also a known Caspian sea resort which accepts many visitors in the summer period due to its nice sandy beaches.
