Azerbaijan is a relatively small country on the western shore of the Caspian sea.
The country of Azerbaijan only recently witnessed its first period of full independence with the fall of the former Soviet Union. Nowadays it is controlled by a dictatorial post soviet regime, but in its history the area of Azerbaijan was part of many of the great empires including the Persian Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire. The land was held also by Arabs, Mongols, Ancient Greeks even Romans.
Nowadays Azerbaijan is a little known tourist destination, but it packs quite a pack of landmarks to visit. It has excellent diversity of climate zones, with snowy high mountains and tropical beaches, lakes and sea resorts, natural reserves and historical buildings.
The people of Azerbaijan, although Muslim, are not fanatical and very friendly and welcoming to foreigners, while its extensive deposits of oil guarantee a very economic traveling inside the country.
