Sarande, considered the gateway to southern Albania, is a town of about 33,000 residents. It is situated on a beautiful bay in the shape of a horseshoe, between majestic mountains and the Ionian Sea. The name of Sarande came from a monastery dedicated to Agioi Saranta or Forty Saints and was also known as Onchesmus in its earliest days.
Situated across the island of Corfu in Greece, Sarande is marked by a Mediterranean climate with warm sea waters. It usually enjoys more than 300 sunny days a year and is the reason why Sarande is one of the most charming tourist destinations on the Albanian Riviera. In fact, many couples spend their vacations here where they can enjoy a stay in a waterfront hotel and enjoy convenient access to restaurants and shops.
Many of the town's attractions lie a little way out of town. Nearby, visitors will find the ancient site of Butrint, the spellbinding Syrii Katterc, and the pristine beaches Ksamili town, where one can cool down after a day of sightseeing.
