Kruje, a small town in Northern Albania, is conveniently just 40 km from the capital city of Tirana. It has about 15,900 inhabitants and enjoys a cooler climate than its neighbour Tirana.
Kruje is also the birthplace of Albania's national hero, Skanderbeg. At the time of his leadership, the city was the centre of the Albanian resistance against the invading Ottoman Turks in the fifteenth century.
The remains of the castle and citadel from which Albanian forces took their stand sit on the hill overlooking the city. Many parts of the castle have been restored, after a devastating earthquake in 1617 caused some parts of the castle to collapse. Today, the castle is home to the Skanderbeg Museum. The street leading to the historic castle is built like a Turkish bazaar that sells a selection of authentic Albania antiques and souvenirs.
Aside from the castle and museum, travellers to the city should see the Dollma, an 18th-century shrine of one of Albania's religions, the Bektashi Movement.
