Popularly known as the City of Stairs, Gjirokaster is a city built on a stretch of mountainous terrain. This is why many streets here are constructed with stairs.
Gjirokaster, in southern Albania, has several claims to fame. Aside from being the birthplace of 2 significant Albanians - the famous writer Ismail Kadare and communist dictator Enver Honxa - the city also effectively showcases the various elements of the country's history, representing its Byzantine, Ottoman, and communist pasts.
Although there are evidences that indicate the area was inhabited as early as the 1st century BC, historical sources say that the city was established under the Byzantine Empire in the 12 century. It then flourished as a key commercial centre under the empire before moving to the Ottomans in 1417.
These historical changes are reflected in the attractions that make the city a destination in Albania. Among its most famous sites are the Kalaja e Gjirokastres, Zekate House, and Ethnographic Museum.
