Butrint in Albania is an essential archeological location containing Hellenistic temple buildings dating back to the 4th century BC. It also features the recent Ottoman defence structures which were created in the 19th century. Butrint was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1992.
Located between Lake Butrint and the Straits of Corfu, Butrint has been occupied by the Greeks as well as the Romans. It was also briefly inhabited by the Venetians under the Byzantine administration. It was eventually abandoned in the latter part of the Middle Ages when marshes formed around the area.
Increasingly becoming a favoured tourist destination, the ruins of Butrint attracts day trippers from the island of Corfu where travellers can take a 90-minute ride to the site. There is also a regular, scheduled bus service between the nearest town of Sarande and Butrint.
Within the site, famous ruins include the Lion Gate, Half Circle Wall, Venetian Fortress, and Byzantine Basilica.
